‘Made in’ label back under Euro spotlight

The January issue of SATRA Bulletin reported that the Italian footwear manufacturers’ association (ANCI) was determined to continue its efforts to encourage the European Commission to enforce mandatory labelling of imported shoes and other consumer goods to indicate where they were made.

Now, according to ANCI, its awareness-raising campaign has led to the ‘Made in’ dossier once again being given serious consideration in Brussels, following the European Commission’s decision last October to remove any planned discussion from the 2013 agenda.

A resolution has been lodged calling for a reconsideration of this decision. It also proposes legislation which ANCI says is compatible with relevant international standards, thus opening an institutional debate with the European Council in order to arrive at a ‘coherent and decisive solution’.

“We want to raise awareness in the European Parliament about the importance of the ‘Made in’ regulation, explaining our motivations and our proposals,” said ANCI president Cleto Sagripanti.
