After a research project which lasted for two years, the Abicalçados and Assintecal Brazilian footwear industry bodies have launched a joint certification project for footwear which they deem to be sustainable.
Shoemakers in Brazil that meet criteria which cover cultural, economic, environmental and social issues will earn the right to display what is termed ‘Sustainable Origin Programme’ certification on their footwear and marketing material.
There will be five levels of certification available: ‘white’, ‘bronze’, ‘silver’, ‘gold’ and ‘diamond’. Companies that have drawn up a sustainability programme but have not yet implemented it will be eligible for a white rating. Bronze certification will be for shoemakers that have made a start on meeting a commitment to sustainability, but still have to make a number of substantial improvements.
Companies applying for silver, gold or diamond ratings will be subjected to external audits, probably once every two years. Only those manufacturers which give evidence of the highest levels of good practice will achieve the top two certifications.
