La Rioja shoemakers encouraged to export more
The President of La Rioja’s regional government, Pedro Sanz, recently travelled to Madrid to support the footwear brands from his autonomous community who took part in the Spanish capital’s Modacalzado show.
According to Mr Sanz, exporting shoes to customers outside Spain should be the focus for La Rioja’s shoe manufacturers. He announced that the region had achieved export revenues of €177.1 million ($229 million) from footwear during 2012, and that the shoe sector had consolidated its position as La Rioja’s second-most important export industry, after wine.
Shoes accounted for some 12 per cent of all of La Rioja’s exports last year. There are currently 128 footwear manufacturers, mostly in and around the town of Arnedo, which ship their products to other markets.
