Nike announces expansion and new executives
US sportswear giant Nike has announced plans to build two new buildings at its Oregon headquarters, in addition to expanding car parking facilities and making road and other campus improvements to support the company’s intended growth.
The decision comes after protracted discussions with the local authorities, which saw the company reportedly considering a move to another state. Last December, Nike received positive news about tax certainty for the next three decades, which helped to ensure their continued presence in the area.
Over the past six years, the company’s employment in Oregon has grown by nearly 60 per cent, with over 8,000 employees and contract workers now based at its headquarters.
Nike has also announced that Michael Spillane has become the vice president and general manager of the company’s Greater China area. Mr Spillane joined Converse in 2007 as president of North America footwear before moving to lead the growth strategy in Converse Apparel as president, North America and global product the following year. He was promoted to chief executive in 2009, and two years later became the chief executive of Umbro.
Mr Spillane replaces Craig Cheek, who is moving to a global role as vice president and general manager of Nike’s Young Athletes, where he will oversee strategy for key categories around the world. Mr Cheek joined Nike in 1990 and has since held various leadership roles in the company. More recently, he led US Footwear, was promoted to vice president and general manager of Nike North America, and then moved to China to drive business in Greater China.
