Beware of non-specification test consumables
SATRA has found instances where users of Martindale abrasion machines for SATRA TM31:2003 and TM174:1994 tests have purchased felt that is out of specification. We recommend carrying out the following checks:
- SATRA TM31:2003 specifies that the diameter of the felt (if pre-cut into circles) should be 165mm for SATRA machines STM105 and STM604 and 140mm for SATRA STM605. This should be measured on a steel rule accurate to ± 0.5mm
- This method also specifies a felt area density (mass per unit area) of 575-800gm2. A balance accurate to at least 0.01g should be used
- In addition, SATRA TM31:2003 specifies the use of 2.0-3.5mm thick felt. A thickness gauge operating at 2kPa pressure should be used, with at least ten discs checked from each batch.
SATRA also has concerns on the identification of standard DIN abrasion rubber used for SATRA TM174:1994. Users should check for the BAM emboss, carried by genuine rubber.
How can we help?
