SATRA research can help shoemakers targeting Asia

Outlining SATRA’s extensive foot data research project in China.

by Tara Holly

SATRA is currently conducting a large-scale research project throughout China to gather specific data of the feet of the Asian community. This data will subsequently allow members of SATRA’s UK research team to further their knowledge of Asian footwear requirements, and thus increase the probability of being able to give advice on the production of more comfortable footwear for the Asian market.

Preparing for a foot scan

The process involved is very simple, as the high-tech scanner does the majority of the calculations. This makes it a straightforward and simple process. Overall, the foot scans take just minutes per delegate to complete.

Children, parents and SATRA staff members meet for a foot scanning session

The scanner is programmed to collect specific data – such as foot length, ball girth circumference and heel breadth. This data is then passed to the research team in order to further their developments.

Concentrating on the project

At SATRA, we pride ourselves on our ability to conduct in-depth research within specialist sectors. This amplifies our knowledge and allows us to bring a superior service to our colleagues and customers alike. SATRA’s Asia foot scanning project began in early 2013, and has been conducted by members of the China office team.

So far, data from over 2,000 people, including children, have been successfully collated. Many SATRA members – including Columbia, Dongguan Rheno, Joinland, Kangnai, MaxGreat, Shoe Town, Simple Footwear, Skechers, Vibram and Zhongshan Glory – have shown considerable hospitality by agreeing to allow the collection of foot data from staff within their facilities. We appreciate such assistance.

Parents and children from a home schooling group were recently invited to join in the project. Interest has also been shown by local schools and kindergartens.

What has been achieved so far is impressive. However, China is an enormous country. Therefore, in order to gain a feasible average from the results being obtained, we will need to take many more data scans from various regions of China. These need to include a variety of delegate ages.

How can we help?

This growing project will provide valuable data for footwear manufacturers. If your company is able to assist SATRA with this ongoing research into Asian footwear requirements, please email the China Office (info@satrafe.com).
