With youth unemployment in Italy reportedly running at more than 40 per cent, young people are being encouraged to learn the skills required for artisan shoemaking and leathergoods manufacture through a variety of training programmes.
According to Giorgio Squinzi, president of employers’ federation Confindustria, the country’s tradition for manufacturing shoes and leathergoods offers a route into employment for young people.
As an example, one Italian company funds a training programme for new artisan shoemakers. Fourteen youngsters aged between 16 and 18 have so far completed the course and others are currently being trained. Those students who have finished their courses are reportedly already in work.
