Shoe collection to be displayed online
One of the world’s largest shoe collections is to be made available for viewing online. This project is part of a drive by the local authorities in Northampton to draw attention to the English town’s shoe collection.
Since the 1870s, museums in Northampton have been collecting shoes. Today there are more than 12,000 pairs in the collection, the earliest examples dating from 1,000 BC.
A number of institutes and individuals use the footwear available as a resource, including international shoe and fashion designers, academics, researchers and filmmakers. Around 5 per cent of the collection is currently available digitally.
