Timberland increases use of recycled plastic bottles
Most Timberland footwear is said to incorporate recycled, organic or renewable materials.
As part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, Timberland used 50 million plastic bottles as recycled PET in its footwear lines during 2013 which, according to the footwear and outdoorwear brand, is an increase of 64 per cent over the previous year. Seventy per cent of Timberland’s footwear now reportedly incorporates recycled, organic or renewable materials.
Timberland has expanded the use of green rubber material (42 per cent of which is recycled latex). During the year, the company produced more than 13 million pairs of green rubber outsoles which used four million pounds of recycled rubber – an increase from the nine million pairs produced and 2.8 million pounds of recycled rubber used in 2012.
Other Timberland CSR projects included health awareness programmes in Bangladesh, and a community childcare centre and financial literacy programmes in India.
