ISA TanTec to open US tannery
ISA TanTec’s US plant will complement its existing facilities.
German leather producer ISA TanTec – which reported a turnover of $70 million in 2013 and currently employs 850 members of staff in Heshan City (China) and Saigon (Vietnam) – is to set up a new production centre in Mississippi, USA. The company buys around 500,000 hides from Texas every year and says it is opening this new plant in response to the growing demand from US shoe manufacturers for high-quality leather that is made in the USA. Like ISA TanTec’s two existing tanneries in China and Vietnam, the plant in Vicksburg is expected to have extremely low consumption of both energy and resources. The company is investing more than $10 million in the new facility, which is anticipated to employ around 370 personnel after it commences operations in January 2015.
According to ISA TanTec, the new tannery will become part of a cluster it is creating to enable leathergoods manufacturers to set up production in the USA. The company has said it will provide production areas and infrastructure, as well as services for engineering and production management. At the same time, businesses can expect to be able to use the resources of ISA TanTec in such areas as administration, finance, human resources and logistics.
