SATRA China seminars prove successful

Reporting on the latest technical seminar programme presented in Dongguan.

The second session of SATRA’s 2014 China technical seminars again proved to be very popular, with more than 40 delegates attending each of the five events. This series of seminars was held during a single week and, as always, covered a wide range of topics. SATRA UK-based experts Steve Rose, Martin Heels and Mark Southam joined SATRA China general manager Liam Donnelly to present the programme and to provide additional technical advice to the attendees. Five seminars were held – two full-day events and three half-day sessions.

The first day was devoted to children’s footwear which explored critical safety and health requirements, as well as quality testing and quality control in supply chains.

Day two comprised two half-day seminars, the first detailing different types of leathergoods, materials used and fitness for purpose testing. The second explained SATRA’s new ‘LabPlus’ service, which draws together the broad range of SATRA’s well-established laboratory consultancy services.

The next full-day seminar was devoted to chemical aspects of footwear, featuring the latest developments in restricted substances (including REACH), discolouration problems, mould and allergies.

The final half-day seminar discussed the importance of process control during shoemaking and highlighted how this is essential to manufacture products of consistent quality. This event also explored the critical areas of leather grading and cutting, stitching and sole bonding, which require strict control.

The programme was presented in English with Chinese translations, fully supported by the Chinese members of staff in SATRA’s Dongguan office. Feedback from delegates was very positive and emphasised the value of this regular series of seminars.

SATRA is planning another two rounds of China seminars during 2015, with the first in May 2015. SATRA can also provide technical seminars and training for individual members on many topics, tailored to the specific company requirements.
