Sportswear giant adidas has announced its intention to sell the Rockport footwear business, which it acquired in 2006, for a reported $280 million. The new owners will be an entity formed jointly by New Balance and private equity firm Berkshire Partners LLC.
Rockport will become part of a new company, which will also include New Balance’s Drydock business, as well as the Aravon, Cobb Hill and Dunham brands.
“Our focus is clearly on sport and operating a brand portfolio with a clear agenda to unleash the potential of athletes and inspire consumers to live active lives. The brown shoe category is not core to this strategy,” said Herbert Hainer, adidas chief executive.
