China show pulls in the crowds
A report on the recent industry fair held in Guangzhou.
The 25th International Shoes and Leather Industry Exhibition – incorporating the Guangzhou International Leather Exhibition and the Guangzhou International Tanning Technology and Machinery Exhibition – was held in Guangzhou, China in June. The event also included an industry conference, which featured speakers from SATRA and a number of other organisations who made presentations on such topics as fashion trends, safety footwear standards and the European PPE Directive.
The SATRA stand proved to be a popular attraction for members attending the show. Chief executive, Austin Simmons, China office general manager, Liam Donnelly, membership consultant, Vivien Hsieh and a number of other technical staff were present to answer visitors’ technical questions, as were colleagues from our China authorised distributer, Team Test Equipment.
A total of 882 exhibitors showcased their products and services. These came from 26 countries and regions, including Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the UK, the USA and Vietnam. More than 50,000 international trade visitors attended to source shoemaking products and tanning machinery, in addition to leather, materials, accessories, components and chemical products.
Fostering talent
Judging of the International Footwear Design Competition (IFDC) took place during the fair. SATRA’s Vivien Hsieh was invited to be one of the judges of the competition, which is one of the highlights of the exhibition. Organised by the Confederation of International Footwear Associations (CIFA) and sponsored by event organiser Top Repute, the show is designed to foster the talent of young designers and to encourage the development of footwear design and fashion. Category winners were presented with their awards at a gala dinner, and the overall gold medal winner was entitled ‘Chinese Opera boot’. The designer of this footwear was inspired by a famous artist of the Beijing Opera, Mei Lanfang (1894-1961) – the colours used, materials selected and overall style being based on traditional clothes worn in Chinese opera.
