New UK International Centre for Leather
The Institute for Creative Leather Technology, the Leather Conservation Centre and the International Museum of Leathercraft are aiming to open an International Centre for Leather in Northampton – at the traditional heart of the UK’s shoemaking industry.
Positioned as a global centre of excellence, the facility will bring together conservation and heritage, creative fashion and design, development and innovation, education and research.
According to Rachel Garwood, director of the University of Northampton’s Institute for Creative Leather, the close juxtaposing of all the aspects of the supply chain means that each will be enriched by the others, allowing new relationships and creative ideas to be generated. She states that those activities will be future-proofed.
The goal for the proposed centre is for it to become the world’s ‘one stop shop’ providing information, insight and inspiration, thus making Northamptonshire the most important global source of leather and leather-related information.
