Footwear and apparel brand Merrell – a division of USA-based Wolverine Worldwide – has signed a multi-year contract with the organisers of Tough Mudder to be the presenting partner at more than 60 extreme obstacle course races around the world.
Each finishing participant will receive a Merrell ‘finisher’ T-shirt, and the company also plans to co-develop gear specifically for Tough Mudder competitors. The first product – the ‘All Out Crush’ trail running shoe – is reportedly scheduled for release during 2016, with additional items to follow.
Tough Mudder events currently take place in six countries and draw some two million participants. The course for each Tough Mudder event is more than ten miles long, with obstacles designed to test both physical and mental strength (see the article 'Staying upright in the mud' for a more in-depth view).
Merrell will also be the presenting partner for a new five-mile obstacle event, called ‘Tough Mudder Half’. This will launch with nine events – six in the USA, one in Canada and two in the UK, with possible additions to the calendar in the second half of the year.
