As part of a project to promote European footwear, some 30 shoe producers will participate in an inaugural European trade mission to Kazakhstan in April. The event has been organised by the European Confederation of the Footwear Industry (CEC) in cooperation with European Profiles SA, and co-funded by the European Commission. The companies will have the opportunity to promote their products in the city of Almaty during the two-day event.
Kazakhstan has been chosen for this trade mission because the EU views the country as an attractive market for footwear companies. Shoe imports reportedly grew tenfold between 2011 and 2014, reaching £391 million ($583 million) in 2014. Exports of footwear to Kazakhstan by EU producers are said to have almost quadrupled in the four years to 2014, but still represent just 10 per cent of total imports. The EU and Kazakhstan initialled an 'enhanced partnership and cooperation agreement' in January of last year to assist trade and investment between the two partners.
