As a Notified Body for personal protective equipment (PPE), SATRA has received official notification that the new European PPE Regulation has been approved by the plenary of the European Parliament. In due course as a result, this regulation will repeal PPE Directive 89/686/EEC and all amending directives, which will give it legal status in all EU Member States. The new regulation is broadly based on the original directive, however there are a number of significant changes that SATRA can help to clarify.
The new regulation will come into force 20 days after it is published in the Official Journal (OJ) of the European Union. This is expected in the coming months, and it will fully apply two years later. A product that is covered by, and in conformity with, PPE Directive 89/686/EEC before the end of this two-year period will have a further 12 months to be placed on the market in EU Member States in order for its approval to remain valid, otherwise the product will need to be re-approved under the new regulation.
Existing CE Mark validity
Any EC type-examination certificates and approval decisions that are issued by SATRA or other Notified Bodies under the PPE Directive 89/686/EEC shall remain valid for seven years after the new regulation comes into force (that is, five years after it applies), unless they expire on a date before the seven years is complete. The validity of newly issued or, where appropriate, renewed certificates shall not exceed five years.
