Revised hardness test method published
SATRA TM205:2016 now includes the Asker C scale
An updated SATRA test method used to assess material hardness has recently been released. SATRA TM205:2016 – 'Hardness of rubber, polyurethane and plastics – durometer method' has been extended to use Asker C as well as to Shore A, D and OO scales. Asker C has become a popular scale in the shoe industry for soft foamed materials used in footbeds (also known as 'insocks' or 'inlaysoles') as well as some of the softer midsole materials, including polyurethane (PU) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). Advice is also given on how to test footbeds, small top-pieces and football studs for their 'apparent' hardness, given that fully standard specimens cannot normally be prepared from such components.
Test methods and standards are the key to ensuring that product performance is measured accurately and consistently. SATRA uses hundreds of in-house, national, European and international test methods and standards in its work, so is in a strong position to help companies through the assessment maze.
