SATRA technical seminars in Dongguan

A series of footwear events is to be held in China.

During November, SATRA experts Mike George and Dave Merrell will join Steve Rose at the SATRA offices and laboratory in Dongguan to deliver a series of technical seminars presented over four days. These biannual events continue to prove very popular with our members in China and surrounding countries.

As before, these seminars are aimed primarily at footwear technologists – those directly involved in the design and manufacture of footwear. They will appeal to those new to the industry and also more experienced personnel wishing to gain an update on the latest thinking in a particular area.

The seminars will take place on Tuesday to Friday, 22nd to 25th November 2016. This year’s presentations will cover a variety of subjects relating to the design and production of footwear.

The programme

On the morning of 22nd November, the topic under consideration will be suede and nubuck leathers. Delegates will learn about the structure of these popular types of upper leathers and discuss the types of footwear in which they are used.

The afternoon will be devoted to an investigation of SATRA test methods, many of which have been adopted by national and international standards. This seminar will summarise the current situation and highlight newly published methods, as well as important changes to established methods.

On Wednesday 23rd November, delegates will consider the use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in solings. This seminar explains how PVC can be safely and effectively used in solings and what benefits it offers to footwear performance.

In the afternoon, the topic covered will be novelty and unusual footwear. With so many types of ‘novelty’ footwear types currently available, from character slippers to shoes containing electrical circuits, the safety and durability implications of these designs is an important consideration.

The morning session on Thursday 24th November, will investigate the first ten years of European REACH legislation, which requires all products marketed in the EU to comply with chemical safety requirements. This seminar will outline the current state of the legislation and how it affects manufacturers and importers.

The afternoon seminar will cover adhesion and solings in safety footwear, and will give advice on the types of solings and their adhesion which are best suited to this type of footwear.

On Friday 25th November, the morning programme will investigate the many types of footwear fastenings available – safety-critical parts of the shoe which must perform well to avoid potential trips or falls that could result in injury. This seminar describes how they should be tested to ensure safe and satisfactory performance.

How can we help?

Please visit www.satra.com/events for further information on these seminars. Members are invited to book delegates directly with our China office (info@satrafe.com). All are free of charge for SATRA member companies. As these are expected to be very popular, we recommend bookings are made as soon as possible as space is limited.
