Nicaraguan industry association Camcunic has asked some 70 footwear manufacturers to start making athletic footwear. Training has been given by Camcunic to the members of staff in the shoemaking companies, most of which are described as 'very small' operations, on construction methods, material selection and market information. A number of the firms have already started to make samples of athletic shoes.

Camcunic president Alejandro Delgado has said that this change can help the nation’s shoemakers to increase their sales by around 20 per cent, and will allow the Central American country's footwear sector to create up to 10,000 new jobs.
