Red Wing Shoe signs up for solar power
The company has finalised a 25-year agreement to buy solar power.
US-based Red Wing Shoe Company has announced that it will soon be sourcing around 25 per cent of its electricity in Minnesota from solar power. The specialist work boot producer recently signed a 25-year agreement with NRG Energy of Texas to buy power from two solar projects.
The NRG schemes are being built under a community ‘solar garden’ programme, which was written into Minnesota law in 2013. This legislation is aimed at businesses and residents who want to use solar power without having to build their own solar arrays.
Red Wing Shoe has subscribed to 40 per cent of the two NRG projects' combined output of six megawatts. The power will feed the company’s headquarters, plants and warehouses in Minnesota. According to a Red Wing Shoe press officer, the solar power being sourced will not only help with environmental sustainability, but will also bring significant long-term cost savings for the company.
