Innocuousness of safety footwear
The requirements for European type-approval of safety footwear include evidence that harmful substances are not present in the components or materials.
EN ISO 20345:2011 – ‘Personal protective equipment – safety footwear’ specifies basic and optional requirements for general-purpose safety footwear. These requirements include performance classifications for protection against mechanical risks such as slip resistance, abrasion resistance and toe impact. In addition, there are also some chemical parameters that safety footwear must satisfy. These are also known as ‘innocuousness requirements’, are included in EN ISO 20345, and are referenced to the innocuousness clause in the European Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Directive 89/686/EEC.
