China looks to establish Indian footwear park
Wenzhou officials aim to set up a footwear components park in Uttar Pradesh
Officials from the Chinese town of Wenzhou have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian government of Uttar Pradesh (UP), with the goal of economic cooperation in the most populous state in India. The Wenzhou representatives are reportedly looking to set up a production area in the Indian state, and have invited the UP chief secretary Rahul Bhatnagar to participate in a ‘China-India dialogue on leather industry capacity cooperation’.
“Wenzhou wishes to establish a footwear components park in central UP,” said Javed Iqbal, regional chairman of the Council for Leather Exports. “The exact location is yet to be explored, but it could possibly be located in Lucknow, Unnao or Hardoi districts.
“In the backdrop of the constraints on supply of rawhide in UP following the closure of unregistered slaughter houses in UP, the proposed park has the potential to help the beleaguered leathergoods manufacturers in Kanpur and neighbouring districts seek other avenues to stay afloat,” added Mr Iqbal.
