Understanding adhesion – part 1: why things stick

Considering the science behind the adhesives used in footwear production.

It is important to understand how adhesion occurs, in order to create a strong bond between such differing components as the varying synthetic and natural materials used in footwear. That bond must also remain strong in the demanding conditions endured by footwear, such as repeated flexing, pressure and exposure to water. This article – the first in a series – describes the different modes of adhesion and the intermolecular forces at play to explain why things stick. Later articles will explore how a good bond can be created and the factors that affect the strength of a bond over time and use.
