New Balance awarded damages in fake footwear case
New Balance has now received substantial damages.
Earlier this year, a number of Chinese footwear manufacturers were found guilty of infringing on the ‘N’ logo used by the New Balance sportswear company. At the time, these shoemakers were fined $250,000 for intellectual property violations (all of which went to the Chinese state) and they were also ordered to immediately stop producing or selling shoe models with variations of the logo. Recently, however, a court in the city of Suzhou has also awarded New Balance more than $1.5 million in damages after ruling that the defendants had infringed on the US company’s ‘unique decoration rights’. This is reportedly the largest award to a foreign company in a trademark dispute within China.
