The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) was formed in December 1994 to replace the former Preferential Trade Area (PTA) which had served Eastern and Southern Africa since the early 1980s. The organisation was created to act as a group of free independent sovereign states that have agreed to cooperate in developing their natural and human resources.
