Disperse dyes and footwear production

Investigating the use of disperse dyes and the restrictions that have been placed on these substances.

Synthetic textiles coloured with certain disperse dyes can be used in footwear or clothing, but these substances may cause an allergic reaction (such as contact dermatitis) in the wearer. There are 21 allergenic disperse dyes which have been identified as having the potential to cause an allergic reaction when in close contact with skin. Approximately 5 per cent of the adult population can display an allergic reaction to disperse dyes, with varying tolerance levels exhibited between individuals.
