Heels, shanks and backpart construction

An overview of plastic heels used in women’s shoes and their attachment to the footwear, and why the shank is a critical component.

The demand for elevated heels will probably never go away. Therefore, it remains important to understand how to engineer the backpart of footwear to provide the necessary rigidity, secure assembly and fatigue resistance in order to ensure the comfort, stability and safety of the wearer. Unstable shoes or broken or detached heels are all safety critical issues, with the potential to cause harm to the wearer.
