VF acquires Altra brand

Outdoor group VF has completed the acquisition of lifestyle, road and trail goods producer Altra. According to

the new owners, the Altra brand provides VF with a differentiated technical footwear brand and a capability that will serve as a catalyst for growth within the outdoor and performance segment.

Altra founder Golden Harper gained a degree in exercise science and fitness, and wrote several research articles on running-related injuries and running techniques. He is said to have cut up and altered various running shoes in an attempt to design better-performing footwear. The result was called ‘Zero Drop’, referring to the lack of height difference between the heel and toe. Altra was founded in 2009, the name taken from the Latin word for ‘to fix or mend something that is broken’.
