US phthalate legislation update

The CPSIA has recently updated the restrictions concerning the use of phthalate plasticisers in children’s footwear.

Of great concern is the potential health risks associated with specific plasticiser compounds. While a number of chemical species can be used as plasticisers, the most common ones are phthalates (esters of phthalic acid). Some phthalates are potentially very hazardous – especially as a result of long-term exposure. This means that children are especially at risk from the carcinogenic, mutagenic and reproductive toxicity (CMR) effects.
