A recent fire in a Delhi footwear factory quickly engulfed it and an adjacent shoemaking facility. Crews using 30 fire engines fought the blaze that spread through combustible materials and continued to burn five hours later, but thankfully there were no reports of casualties. Indicating the great care needed with the materials used in footwear factories, there have been devastating fires in shoemaking plants over the past three years in such diverse locations as Australia, Bangladesh, India, the Philippines, Romania, Russia, South Africa and the UK.
