New 3D scanning service
SATRA has invested in an advanced hand-held 3D scanner.
Scanning is becoming a widely used tool in the footwear industry, and it has many applications in the manufacturing process. SATRA has invested in an advanced ‘Creaform Handyscan 700’ hand-held 3D scanner, which is already proving to be a most useful addition to our suite of 3D imaging and modelling tools. Capable of scanning to an accuracy of 0.03mm, this laser scanner provides highly detailed 3D scans of even complex objects in a matter of minutes.
Detailed measurements can be taken from the surface topography of scanned items, allowing comparisons to be made between new and tested samples, or between unweathered and weathered samples. Lasts can be scanned to compare their shape and dimensions to the CAD files from which they were created, and moulded products can be scanned to compare their shape and dimensions to a scan of the mould in which it was made. The potential offered by the 3D scanner for reverse engineering also makes it useful for the production of bespoke test equipment and other items.
3D scanning is a developing technology, but has already met a number of needs within SATRA and the footwear industry. As interest and applications for the technology continue to increase, it looks set to be a tool that is very much in demand.
