Revised content for SATRA basic shoemaking course

Announcing a new programme for this popular event.

SATRA’s long-running ‘Basic shoemaking step-by-step’ course, which provides a simple guide to the process of manufacturing footwear, has been updated to better reflect the chronological order in which footwear is made. There is also a stronger emphasis on the actual manufacturing process, and the sessions on materials are now positioned at more logical places in the itinerary.

This two-day course will start with a consideration of basic shoemaking terminology and different footwear styles. Delegates will then investigate the various processes used to construct footwear, focusing on the stages which take place in the stitching and making rooms, as well as the different ways of attaching soles and ancillary actions such as shoe room finishing and inspection. The programme will review the key materials used to make footwear, with discussions on upper materials (leathers, textiles and synthetics), sole materials and components – including insoles, box toes (toe puffs) and counters (stiffeners).

Day two will begin with a visit to a local shoe factory to observe the processes that have been considered. After returning to SATRA, the delegates will examine factors that affect the customer – including fit, comfort and consumer complaints. There will also be a discussion on quality control tests with a tour of the laboratory.

As an introductory course to the shoemaking process, this is especially suited to those who are new to the industry and want a broad grounding in the topic. Marketing staff, buyers, designers, material suppliers and any other personnel who need an introduction to footwear manufacture would also benefit from attending.

The event, which is reserved for SATRA members, will be held at SATRA’s Kettering head office on four dates during 2020: April 8th-9th, June 24th-25th, October 21st-22nd and December 2nd-3rd. Both days will begin at 9:00am, with a buffet lunch at 12:45 and final comments at 4:30pm. The price is 755 GBP per delegate plus VAT where applicable.
