Support for track shoe innovation

According to president of World Athletics Sebastian Coe, curbing the research and development of running shoes would suffocate innovation, despite elite athletes regularly breaking world records while wearing high-tech footwear. The point has not been reached where world records ‘are being handed out like confetti’, he added.
“There’s a built-in dynamic where shoe companies mercifully are still investing a lot of money into the research and development of shoes. I’m pleased they’re doing that,” said Lord Coe. “At the moment, I’m pretty calm about this, and the balance of judgment here is always... that we shouldn’t be in the business of trying to suffocate innovation.”
