Do arch supports offer any benefits?
Reviewing the purpose behind the incorporation of arch supports in the design of footwear, and whether their use is always justified.
The research information published on arch supports relates mainly to medical or orthopaedic use. In these applications, arch supports are usually tailor-made for the individual foot with a specific objective in mind – for example, to alleviate painful pathological conditions or correct an abnormal gait. However, does the ‘normal’ healthy foot need to be supported under the instep?
