Statutes adopted in June by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation (CENELEC) created a new type of full member for countries which, like the UK, had left the European Union. Two months later, the British Standards Institution (BSI)’s compliance with the rules of the new member type was successfully audited. Then on 25th November, the CEN and CENELEC General Assemblies voted overwhelmingly to support the BSI’s continued membership of both European bodies.
As such, the BSI retains its rights to run and participate in committees and to adopt European EN standards. Although there will be some changes to how the BSI is represented in the CEN and CENELEC governing bodies, it will continue to hold seats on their respective technical boards.
According to the BSI, this decision provides certainty and continuity for its UK stakeholders. The new policy is fully in line with the UK/EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement, and is said to support the UK Designated Standards System which specifically refers to the role of European standards. BSI experts will continue to have the right to contribute to European technical work, and the organisation can propose new work items, apply to hold secretariats and to nominate committee chairs.
