Analysts’ reports suggest that the Turkish leather industry is likely to achieve export revenues of around GDP 1.2 billion (USD 1.6 billion) for 2021. This would be similar to 2018 figures and would fall short of the expected GBP 1.5 billion (USD 2 billion) for the year.

According to the Turkish Leather Industrialists’ Association, strong growth had been seen in the value of exports of semi-processed and finished leather in the first ten months of 2021 compared to the same period in the previous year. However, a lack of improvement in the shipment of footwear, leather garments and accessories affected overall progress. This led to estimated footwear exports of around GBP 750.9 million (USD 1 billion) in 2021, some GBP 300.3 million (USD 400 million) for garments and leathergoods, and around GBP 150.2 million (USD 200 million) for finished and semi-processed leather.

Focusing on one month in 2021, the Tokyo-based Japan Leather and Leather Goods Industries Association (JLIA) recently released year-on-year figures for the sector’s exports and imports during August. Foreign sales of Japanese-made leather footwear rose by 40 per cent over August 2020 figures to reach GBP 5.6 million (USD 7.5 million). Meanwhile, imports of leather footwear totalled GBP 291 million (USD 387.4 million) for the month, which represented an 8.9 per cent increase over the same month in the previous year.

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the first four months of the current fiscal year (July to October 2021) saw the country’s footwear exports boosted in value by just over 12 per cent to GBP 35.8 million (USD 47.7 million). The volume of footwear exports totalled a little under 5.3 million pairs – a rise of more than 5.2 per cent. Of these, leather footwear exports represented approximately 81.6 per cent of the total value of footwear exports to give a total revenue of GBP 29.2 million (USD 38.9 million). However, the export of canvas shoes during this period saw a significant downturn, reporting seven million pairs, compared to the 94 million pairs exported  in the first four months of the 2020 to 2021 fiscal year.
