Development of a facility in Nigeria said to be capable of producing two million pairs of shoes each year has been formally commissioned by the nation’s senate president, Dr Ahmad Lawan. Commenting at a ceremony held in Obingwa, Abia State, Dr Lawan remarked how the plans show that ‘nothing is impossible, despite the lean resources available to the state’.
Abia governor Okezie Ikpeazu said that about one million young people are currently employed in the leather and garment sectors within the state, and that the new enterprise is expected to create employment opportunities for these workers. Turkish companies will be supplying the production equipment, on which work boots, school shoes, military footwear, police shoes and formal men’s shoes will be made.
