Mexican footwear sector heading for recovery?
According to Alejandro Gómez Támez, executive president of Guanajuato-based footwear industry body CICEG, production by Mexico’s footwear manufacturers is predicted to exceed 200 million pairs during 2022.
Such an achievement would represent a 20 per cent boost over the 2020 figure, but would still be significantly lower than the 250 million pairs achieved by the industry in 2019 before the pandemic seriously affected global trade.
Commenting on the current situation, Mr Gómez Támez said that there had been a recovery in 2021, but added that the level of further growth this year would depend on the levels of illegally imported shoes arriving in Mexico.
