Two years after US basketball star and Nike athlete Kobe Bryant was killed alongside his daughter Gianna (‘Gigi’) and seven others in a helicopter crash, sportswear producer Nike is working with his family to establish a youth basketball centre in Southern California. The company is also designing footwear to raise funds for the Bryant family’s foundation. Nike worked with Mr Bryant for a number of years on a range of basketball shoes, and all proceeds from the first new Kobe release – called the ‘Kobe 6 Protro Mambacita Sweet 16’ in honour of Gigi Bryant – will be donated to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation, which was founded by the Bryant family following the accident.
Commenting on how much Kobe Bryant still means to many sports fans around the world, Nike chief executive John Donahoe said: “His impact in growing the sport, particularly encouraging women and young people to pick it up, endures as one of his deepest, lasting legacies. Together with his wife Vanessa, we hope to honour Kobe and Gigi by championing a new generation for many years to come.”
