Boost for Portuguese footwear exports

In the first quarter of 2022, Portuguese footwear producers are said to have exported 21 million pairs, valued at USD 515.7 million/GBP 423.9 million. This revenue represents an increase of 25.2 per cent in Q1 compared to the same period in 2021. Portuguese sales within Europe rose by 23.2 per cent, with the German market up by 17 per cent to USD 116.1 million/GBP 95.4 million, France logging growth of 24.2 per cent totalling USD 110.9 million/GBP 91.1 million, the Netherlands boosted by 28.7 per cent to USD 78.5 million/GBP 64.5 million and the UK improving by 29.5 per cent to USD 29.3 million/GBP 24.1 million.
Further afield, sales of Portuguese shoes and boots in the USA grew by 64.8 per cent to USD 23 million/GBP 18.9 million, Canada reported a rise of 62 per cent to USD 5.2 million/GBP 4.3 million, Exports to China were up by 96 per cent to USD 4 million/GBP 3.3 million and increased by 37.4 per cent in Japan to USD 2.6 million/GBP 2.2 million.
“Despite all the external constraints, the indicators suggest that 2022 will be a year of affirmation for Portuguese footwear in international markets. Exports grew not only when compared to the previous year, but also surpassed those of 2019, the year immediately before the pandemic,” stated Luís Onofre, president of national trade body APICCAPS.
