Persistent Organic Pollutants and shoemaking
Highlighting the hazards associated with these substances and explains why they may be found in materials commonly used in the footwear industry.
POPs are organic substances that persist in the environment and can therefore accumulate in animals and humans. They pose a risk to health and the environment – specific effects of some POPs are that they are carcinogenic, allergenic, affect the nervous system, are endocrine disruptors and have developmental effects. In addition, due to their bioaccumulation in animals and humans, the rate the substance is consumed is faster than the rate it leaves the body.
