SATRA shares in special Everest anniversary event
Members of the SATRA team recently attended a special event at the prestigious Royal Geographical Society in London, which was held to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1953 British expedition that took men to the top of Mount Everest for the first time.
Considerable interest was shown in our display of the original Everest boots and paperwork from SATRA’s historical archive, and the team enjoyed meeting some of the sons and daughters of the 1953 expedition team as well as survival expert and TV presenter Ray Mears, who stopped by to view the boots.
It was a day of fascinating and inspiring lectures, which brought together accounts of the first successful climb to the summit of the mountain, alongside modern-day adventure stories and insights into what it is really like to attempt such a challenge.
The photograph above shows SATRA’s Christine Anscombe showing Peter Hillary one of the SATRA-designed boots worn by his father Edmund and the other members of the successful 1953 Everest ascent team.
