Merrell unveils scrap material footwear line
To mark the annual ‘Zero Waste Week’ campaign designed to support the reduction of landfill waste, outdoor footwear producer Merrell has introduced ‘Scrap’ – a limited-run collection incorporating excess materials from the production line that may have otherwise ended up in the waste stream. The shoes – each of which is said to offer a ‘one-of-a-kind’ pattern – are available online in the US, Canada and EMEA.
According to Merrell’s senior design director, Ian Cobb, the Scrap line’s signature feature is a computerised grid stitch used to trap all the normally unusable scrap pieces, thus leading to a unique aesthetic across the collection. “This was a ‘passion project’ for our team as we look to merge style with eco-conscious decisions such as making footwear with excess materials from the production process,” he said.
