Brazilian leather export volume grew in 2023
There were mixed results for overseas shipments of Brazilian hides and skins last year, compared to the previous 12 months. While exports increased by 13 per cent in area and 21.5 per cent in weight, they dropped by 8.3 per cent in value over the same period in 2022. A total of 158.9 million square metres were purchased by customers abroad, with this leather weighing the equivalent of 430,600 tonnes and raising USD 1.1 billion (GBP 869 million).
Brazilian leather was used by shoemakers and leather goods producers in 81 countries. A little over 31 per cent of the exports went to China and Hong Kong, with US companies taking 16 per cent and Italian businesses buying 12.1 per cent. According to the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB), finished leather made up 51.9 per cent of these shipments, crust totalled 12.4 per cent, wet blue 25.4 per cent, split wet blue 9.3 per cent and salted leather 1.1 per cent.
