Brazilian shoemakers see ‘green shoots’ of recovery
More than 5,000 jobs were created within the Brazilian footwear industry in the first two months of 2024. However, while this may be seen as a small sign of recovery, it is ‘no cause for euphoria’, according to the nation’s footwear industries association Abicalçados.
The body’s executive president Haroldo Ferreira has stressed that while the figures point to a slight recovery, the sector’s capacity is far below that of previous years. The total number of footwear jobs in Brazil is still 6.8 per cent lower than in the same period in 2023.
Mr Ferreira also claimed that the exemption of international platforms from taxes on imports valued up to USD 50 has affected the industry’s activity.
