Extension announced to deforestation legislation

The European Union’s Deforestation Regulation (‘EUDR’) was due to come into force on 30th December 2024. However, after several global partners expressed concerns about their preparedness, the European Commission has proposed to provide affected companies, including those in the leather sector, with an extra 12 months to be ready to comply. The EUDR will now be enforced for larger organisations on December 30th 2025, and on June 30th 2026 for smaller businesses.

This deferment plan must first gain approval from the European Parliament and Council, which the Commission aims to secure before the end of 2024. New guidance will provide ‘additional clarity’ to help companies and authorities take the steps necessary to follow the new rules. This is likely to mean firms working with leather submitting detailed information about the origin of hides used by tanners. Please click here for an in-depth review of the EUDR.
