The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade is considering the establishment of an international centre to manufacture, store and trade raw materials for textiles in addition to leather footwear production, with the aim of bolstering the supply chains for these sectors.

According to Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Phan Thi Thang, the leather and textile industries are important to Vietnam’s economy. She therefore says that the country needs to ‘take control’ of the source of everything required for these materials’ production.

In a recent six-month period, the combined export turnover of leather and textile footwear production reportedly reached close to USD 30 billion. This is said to account for 16 per cent of Vietnam’s total turnover, which supports nearly five million jobs – some 22 per cent of industrial jobs in the country.

However, Pham Tuan Anh – deputy director of the Ministry’s Industry Department – noted that Vietnamese producers currently have to import such raw materials as cotton, wool, silk, linen, synthetics and leather, as well as accessories, from China, South Korea and other ASEAN countries.

A key aim of this new project is to assist Vietnamese businesses in tracing the origin of the materials they use, thus ensuring a high level of transparency, as well as achieving a high standard of product through regular assessment. Development of an information platform will keep domestic businesses up-to-date with the latest production technology and fashion trends.
