Campaign launched against footwear piracy in Brazil

The Brazilian Association of Footwear Industries (Abicalçados) has launched an initiative aimed at combating the growing presence of counterfeit goods, which it says has become ‘a significant threat’ to the country’s footwear industry.

According to the Global Organised Crime Index, which assesses resilience to organised crime, Brazil ranks 171 out of 193 countries for counterfeit product circulation. This issue is said to be particularly acute within the footwear industry, because most fake examples – primarily of sports brands – are being produced domestically rather than imported into Brazil.

In addition to raising awareness of this issue within the footwear sector and working with manufacturers, retailers and other stakeholders, Abicalçados aims to gather information on sales of counterfeit footwear in Brazil, with cases being reported to law enforcement for investigation and possible legal action.
