Revised SATRA test method released
SATRA TM159 – ‘Cushioning properties’ has been updated to a 2024 version. The method remains primarily for footbeds and midsoles (SATRA TM183 is used for whole shoe cushioning). A lower pressure thickness gauge is specified for very soft foams. The sequence of cutting out, then conditioning, then measuring thickness and commencing testing is emphasised.
Specimen locations are now given, 15 per cent from the rear heel and 25 per cent from the toe. For the dynamic compression (fatigue ageing) part of the process, detailed instructions are given on how to adhere the specimen so that it may be dismounted from the compression apparatus without tearing the portion needed for the cushion test.
In between compression cycles up to 245 N, the force is returned to 10 N rather than to zero. This is for practical reasons and reverts to pre-2018 practice. Other changes are mainly editorial, rearranging some clauses and introducing new colour imagery and a contents page, in line with all recent method updates.
